Islamabad, November 28, 2013 (PPI-OT): Addressing representatives of 152 states, in General Assembly of International Maritime Organization’s 28th session in London, Federal Minister for Port and Shipping, Senator Kamran Michael said that security level in International Waters has been a cause of concern for all of us which needs to be fully addressed. He said that sea trade and secure shipping is of prime importance to us for increase in international as well regional maritime trade.
Dilating on the contribution of Pakistan in maritime trade, the Minister said Pakistan is having three functional ports, Karachi, Bin Qasim and Gawadar where volume of maritime trade is continuously increasing. Besides, the Gawadar deep sea port is going to interlink the whole of Asia, the minister remarked.
He said development of a deep draft port at Karachi has been undertaken that would facilitate anchorage of 400 meter long mother ships. The Minister said Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Maritime Security Agency always keep patrolling in assigned areas to ensure security at sea.
The Minister said that Pakistan is playing a responsible role in environment control and safety of sea men and regulation of SOLAS and MARPOL has been implemented in Pakistan. Elaborating the steps taken by Pakistan, the Minister said that he had established maritime control board to monitor the environment. More so Kamran Michael said that Pakistan was following London Convention regulations to promote shipping in Pakistan.
Senator Kamran Michael is first ever Pakistani Minister who addressed this high level forum for promotion of Ports and shipping of Pakistan.
