Scores of Kashmiris languishing in Indian jails

Srinagar, June 10, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, scores of Kashmiris implicated in fake cases are languishing in Jaipur, Gujrat, Rajasthan, Bangalore and Tihar jails in India despite many of them have completed their term.

Nazir Ahmed Baba from Rainawari, Srinagar told media men that his brother Bashir Ahmed Baba was languishing in one of the jails in Vadodra in Gujarat for the past three years.

“When we go to meet him after covering a long distance and spending huge money, the jail authorities give us only 15 minutes and we return with gloomy faces,” he deplored.

On March 14, 2010, Gujarat’s ‘Anti-Terrorist Squad’ (ATS) arrested Bashir Ahmad Baba on a fake charge of his association with a Mujahid organization and sent him to Vadodara Central jail. But Bashir’s family contested police claim saying that he was sent to Gujarat by the NGO he was working with.

“My brother Bashir Ahmed Baba was picked up by the Anti Terrorist Squad of Gujarat on mere suspicion and since then he is languishing in Vadodara jail. He is innocent. His only guilt is that he is a Kashmiri,” Nazir said.

A police officer on condition of anonymity told media men that the authorities in occupied Kashmir knew that Baba was innocent yet they “cannot do anything as the judiciary in Gujrat functions in accordance with the State.”

At least 50 to 60 Kashmiri people are languishing in different jails across India, said Hurriyet leader, Zamrooda Habib.

“Engineer Farooq, Mirza Nisar and Abdul Ghani Goni are languishing in Jaipur Jail and similarly others have been lodged in Tihar, Bangalore, Rajasthan and Gujrat jails,” she said adding they are being harassed and tormented on one or other pretext.
