Lahore, May 07, 2015 (PPI-OT): A comprehensive presentation on water sector projects being implemented by WAPDA in Balochistan was made to Gen. (R) Abdul Qadir Baloch, Federal Minister SAFRON, during his visit to WAPDA House, today. Chairman WAPDA Zafar Mahmood, Member (Power), Member (Finance), Secretary WAPDA, PSO, Chief Engineer (South), Chief Engineer (Kachhi Canal Project) and Director (SMD) WAPDA were present on the occasion.
In his introductory remarks, the WAPDA Chairman welcomed the Federal Minister and threw light on the issues, challenges and opportunities during implementation of various water sector projects in Balochistan. He further stated that a meeting with the Government of Balochistan will be held in Quetta soon to discuss the water sector projects with an aim to get these projects included in the priority list of Balochistan Government.
The Chairman said that the projects can face delay due to poor law and order situation and delayed release of funds. He asked the Minister to help seek permission of the Government of Balochistan to divide the ongoing work in two shifts due to intense heat in the project areas.
It was decided that a meeting of stakeholders of Naulong Dam Project would be arranged to address their reservations and explore the possibilities of providing irrigation water to the land belonging to Zehri tribes, being affectees of submergence in the reservoir of the Project. It was noted in the meeting that the development of Pelar Dam will help ensure socio-economic uplift of Baloch people by eradicating unrest and improving law and order situation in the area. It was further decided to approach the Government of Balochistan with a request to give priority to Pelar, Garuk, Winder and Hingol Dam Projects for construction as these projects will herald a new era of socio-economic development in the province.
Gen. (r ) Abdul Qadir Baloch appreciated the efforts of WAPDA on completion of water sector projects in Balochistan. He said that completion of the ongoing projects will go a long way in socio-economic development of Balochistan. He promised to take up the issues hindering progress of projects with the Federal as well as Balochistan Governments to accelerate their implementation.
