Srinagar, February 07, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the Joint Resistance Leadership has said that the struggle and sacrifices rendered by great leaders of Kashmiri freedom struggle – martyr Muhammad Maqbool Butt and martyr Muhammad Afzal Guru – are glorious chapter of Kashmir’s resistance history. The leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik in a statement issued in Srinagar, today, said that Indian not only hanged these Kashmiri leaders but also had kept their mortal remains under its custody till now.
“The struggle, passion for freedom and sacrifices of these great Kashmiris will always remain a beacon light for Kashmiri people,” the statement said while announcing a comprehensive protest program on martyrdom days of Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru.
Giving details of protest calendar, the leadership said that complete shutdown would be observed on Saturday and Monday. It pointed out that on the martyrdom day of Muhammad Afzal Guru on Saturday, 9th of February, a complete shutdown would be observed across the Valley. On 10th of February, prayers will be held in all main masajid for these martyrs.
Recalling the sacrifice of martyr Muhammad Maqbool Butt, the JRL said that a complete shutdown would be observed on Monday, 11th of February 2019. Besides shutdown, protest demonstrations will be held at Lal Chowk in Srinagar demanding the return of mortal remains of these martyrs to their motherland for a proper burial. A memorandum will also be sent to UN Secretary General, seeking the intervention of the World Body for settlement of the Kashmir dispute.
India had hanged Muhammad Afzal Guru in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on 9th of February, 2013 and Muhammad Maqbool Butt, on 11th of February, 1984 for their role in Kashmir freedom movement. Their bodies remain buried in the premises of the jail.
Terming the struggle and martyrdom of great resistance leader martyr Mohammad Maqbool Butt as a glorious chapter of history, the JRL said that his struggle and sacrifices would always guide us through the tough journey of our freedom struggle. It said that Maqbool Butt strived for freedom of Kashmir and kissed gallows for the sacred cause. While remembering the sacrifice rendered by son of Kashmir Muhammad Afzal Guru, the JRL said that martyr Afzal kissed gallows and refused to surrender before tyranny. The way India hanged these Kashmiris unlawfully on a lame excuse of satisfying collective conscience of Indians is a glaring example of Indian colonial mind-set towards people of Jammu Kashmir, it added.
The JRL said that Kashmiris would never disregard these sacrifices and would keep demanding for the mortal remains of their loved ones who remain incarcerated at Tihar Jail even after their martyrdom. Appealing people of Jammu Kashmir to make JRL protest programme successful, the leaders said that Kashmiris would observe complete shutdown on 9th and 11th February 2019 and on 10thFebruary, prayers would be held across the valley for these great martyrs at masajid.
On 11th February 2019, besides a complete and comprehensive shutdown, protest demonstrations will be held at Lal Chowk Srinagar demanding the return back of mortal remains of great martyrs to their mother land for a proper burial. A memorandum will also be sent to UN secretary general, demanding the return of mortal remains of martyrs Maqbool Butt and Afzal Guru.
