Russia Proposes a Free Trade Zone

Lahore, December 16, 2015 (PPI-OT): The ambassador of the Russian Federation, Excellency Alexey Y. Dedov along with Consul General Oleg N. Avdeev, Honorary Council Habib Ahmed and Trade representative Yury M. Kozlov visited the Punjab Board of Investment and Trade (PBIT) here in Lahore on Wednesday 16th December.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss Pak-Russia trade possibilities. The delegation showed keen interest in importing citrus fruits from Pakistan especially Kinnow. They also discussed a possibility of halal food trade between Punjab and republic of Tatarstan.

The ambassador stressed upon the need for a frequent exchange of delegations to promote Pak-Russia ties. His Excellency also proposed an annual forum to be held in Russia to attract investments in the energy sector. The delegation invited PBIT to share potential projects and to interact with prospective investors in Russia.

The possibility of declaring a free trade zone between Russia, Pakistan and other trade partners was also discussed. Representatives of all prominent media outlets were present at the event. The ambassador also spoke to the media after the meeting and answered their questions.

Abdul Basit said that Russia could evaluate the possibilities of collaboration with Pakistan in marble and granite mining too. Oil and gas is another sector where Russia’s experience and technology could help Pakistan. Chairman PBIT Mr. Abdul Basit said that the visit of Russian Ambassador is very encouraging and it could open up new avenues of partnerships and joint ventures between Russia and Punjab province.
