Road safety awareness stressed: Farooq Azam

Islamabad, January 28, 2013 (PPI-OT): Motorway Police is fighting and making vigorous efforts to reduce accident rate to lowest level by maintaining better discipline on roads through briefing, road safety awareness secessions and constructive enforcement.

These remarks were made by Mr.Farooq Azam, Sector Commander, N-5 (North-II), National Highway and Motorway Police Islamabad during a meeting with Mr.Zafar Bakhtawari, President of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) during his visit to Chamber House.

Sector Commander informed the meeting that special refresher courses were being designed for the professional drivers so that their status in society could be enhanced and they could realize their responsibilities. He said that drivers training schools should be encouraged so that we could brought a good traffic discipline on roads.

Mr.Farooq Azam said awareness among commercial vehicle drivers and other motorists of road safety was necessary to ensure safety of road users’ life. He said many accidents could be avoided if motorists drove vehicles carefully and followed traffic rules. Dozing at the wheel is a major reason for deadly accidents on highways and motorways, he added.

He further said that most of the vehicles on the roads are not fit for driving, adding that existing system of checking vehicle fitness was not compatible that needs to be improved as par with international standards.

By cited the example of Chinese economy, Mr.Farooq Azam appreciated the important role of private sector in the development of economy and said that Chambers could play major role in economic transformation of the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr.Zafar Bakhtawari, President ICCI lauded the dynamic role of Motorway Police for its services in Road Safety towards nation. He said that Motorway Police is an exemplary corruption free institution and presented the culture of help to the road users in distress, which ended the gap between police and people.

He emphasized upon other institutions to work on these lines and play their imperative role for country’s progress.

ICCI President said that motorway Police is playing key role in educating the public about road safety and traffic rules which have developed positive results in the shape of civilized behavior on the roads.
