Islamabad, March 19, 2014 (PPI-OT): Speaking at a Seminar on the Promotion of book reading among students, Minister of State for Education and Interior Eng. M. Baligh-ur-Rehman said that reading a book promoted dreaming, imagination and thinking which ultimately leads to empowerment through sensible decision-making.
Because an educated mind is a sound mind which is easy to lead but difficult to rule. Therefore reading books is very important so teachers and students should inculcate reading habits among the children. The Minister lamented the fact that we as a nation have poor record of reading books.
While stressing the importance of reading he said that Allah Almighty in His first revelation asked His beloved Prophet about reading and being the follower of Islam, it is our religious and constitutional obligation to get education for which reading books is the primary source. The Minister also instructed the faculty to give reading assignments to the students because reading books engaged the mind of the students and in the process educated and ultimately empowered them.
He further stated that education was must to eradicate poverty. He elaborated how reading is important even in the era of thinking technologies which resulted in sharp decline of reading books. He said there was a need to differentiate between information and knowledge.
He stressed that book reading is as important as it used to be before the era of thinking technologies, only there is need to sensitize this issue. Among other speakers were representatives of American and Chinese Embassies to sensitize the student on the importance of reading.
