Qaim Ali Shah presides meeting of Sindh Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan

Karachi, November 26, 2012 (PPI-OT): Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah today presided a meeting of Sindh Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan at Chief Minister House. The meeting was attended by Sindh Minister for Agriculture Syed Ali Nawaz Shah, Sindh Finance Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Principal Secretary to C.M Sindh Mr. Muhammad Siddique Memon, Secretary Agriculture Sindh Agha Jan Akhtar, Chairman REAP Mr. Jawed Ali Ghori, Mr. Mehboob Ahmed, Mr. Farooq Chowdhry and Mr. Taka Mal. Chief Minister Sindh said that province of Sindh is producing various varieties and products of agriculture and food items.

He said that Sindh province has achieved maximum yield and target productions particularly in wheat, rice, sugarcane, barley, vegetables, fruits and other produces for food requirements of people and many items are being exported to other countries.

He said that it is appreciated that over 2.2 million tones of quality rice is being exported in many countries and out of which 50% rice pertains to province. He said that 20% rice yield has exceeded in Sindh province which has helped the growers in enhancement of their income. Syed Qaim Ali shah said that there are more than 800 Rice mills in interior areas of province.

Chief Minister Sindh said that government has to look-after interests of rice growers together with rice millers and owners of rice husking mills. He also appreciated that the Basmati rice has improved in Sindh province.

The Chairman and members of REAP thanked the Chief Minister for holding meeting and informed that due to old traditions of rice husking and other methods, the rice is broken and damaged with the result maximum rice remains un-exported.

The office bearers of REAP informed that due to provision of latest technology and rice processing, the wastage and damage has been minimized, with the result, the export quality of rice has increased but there is need of qualified and well mechanized trained workers. The Chairman of REAP suggested that their Association intends to establish quality maintaining and technically fitness institute at Karachi, where youth of interior Sindh will also be admitted.

The length of course will be 2-years and all expenses will be borne by REAP. Sindh Secretary Agriculture Agha Jan Akhtar observed that keeping in view of need, the said Institute be established in interior of Sindh preferably at Dokri. Chief Minister Sindh decided to form a high level committee to discuss and suggest a comprehensive proposal for establishment of such instate, in collaboration of REAP and STEVTA.

The committee will submit its report within 15 days and rural area point of view will be accommodated while efforts will be given to also accommodate issues of growers. Regarding enhancement of rate/price of Irri-6 product, unnecessary and excessive charging of Market Committee, import and use of high yield of Indian rice variety, the Chief Minister Sindh directed that all such issues be considered in the newly formed committee. He also directed that the matters pertaining to Basmati rice and allied subject may also be considered in that meeting of committee.
