Lahore: Punjab University Zoology Department, on the eve of World Animal Day, organized a special ceremony at Lahore Zoo. Chairman Zoology Department Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar was the chief guest while Director Lahore Zoo Shafqat Ali, Deputy Director Zahid Iqbal Bhatti, PU Director Undergraduate Studies Prof Dr Amir Ijaz, Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan, Prof Dr Shahid, faculty members and a large number of students were also present on the occasion. A cake was also cut on the occasion and Prof Dr M Akhtar, faculty members and students presented fruits to elephant “Suzi.”
Addressing the ceremony, Prof Dr M Akhtar said animals were an important part of our society and their care was our duty. He said we should create awareness among people about the importance of species of animals and birds by organizing ceremonies so that steps could be taken. He said we should also create awareness among people for the protection of animals around us and especially sea-lives.
Talking about adoption of two tigers by the PU, Dr Akhtar said one should donate according to one’s capacity in this regard. He said the PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran had a great love for animals and adoption of two tigers of Lahore Zoo “Sam” and “Mohni” was an example. Prof Dr Naeem Khan advised the students to carry out maximum research on animals and develop a habit of getting knowledge from them.
Shafqat Ali thanked the PU administration and especially VC Dr Mujahid Kamran for organizing ceremony on World Animal Day at Lahore Zoo. He said the students visiting the Zoo got an opportunity to know about animals along with entertainment. Prof Dr Amir Ijaz said we should love animals as they are our companions and our religion also teaches us a lesson in this regard. He said the western people also took care of animals and that’s why they are advanced and developed in this field. He requested the media to play role in creating awareness among people to love animals.
Zahid Iqbal Bhatti in his welcome address thanked the Punjab University administration and said the participation of faculty members and teachers on the eve of World Animal Day was a pride for Lahore Zoo administration. He said the usage of shopping bag must be given up as it is dangerous for human and animals alike.
Later, Dr Muhammad Akhtar, faculty members and students visited Jallo Forest Park where they were given briefing about species of animals and birds.
