Protests against youth’s death in Srinagar Jail

Srinagar, May 18, 2014 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, protests erupted in Khanyar area of Srinagar after a local youth undergoing illegal detention since 2009, died in Central Jail, Srinagar. Mushtaq Ahmad Gilkar, son of Ali Muhammad Gilkar of Koolipora, Khanyar, died in Srinagar’s Central Jail.

As soon the news of Mushtaq’s death spread, the people blocked the road near Shiraz Cinema Khanyar and demanded inquiry into his death. Meanwhile, massive protests rocked Kunzer town of Baramulla district after the death of a teenage girl.

Residents of the area said that that the girl, who had come to her relative’s home in Aatipora, was raped by a constable of Indian Reserve Police Force posted in the area. The constable, the residents said, had barged into the girl’s residence and raped her the other night.

The residents said that the teenager had developed medical complications and was shifted to a local hospital but was referred to SMHS hospital where she died.

Soon after the news of death spread, the people took to streets and held strong protest demonstrations. They had brought her body to Kunzar and blocked Srinagar-Gulmarg road. However, police burst tear smoke shells and dispersed the protestors. Later, postmortem was conducted and the body was handed over to family for burial.
