Protests against arrest of Imam under black law

Srinagar, September 02, 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, protest demonstrations were held at Chowgam in Qazigund against booking of an imam under draconian law, Public Safety Act (PSA).

Imam Jamia Masjid Chowgam Qazigund, Hafiz Syed Kifayat was arrested by the Indian police in the backdrop of anti-Muslim violence in Kishtwar.

People said the Imam was innocent and was targeted on the behest of some political workers affiliated with the ruling party in the territory.

“We demand his immediate release as he is innocent. The day Chowgam witnessed protests against communal violence in Kishtwar area. Imam Hafiz Kifayat had gone to his native village in Doda. He is innocent and has nothing to do with all these protests,” Hafiz Abdul Rehman Ashrafi of Darul Aloom Syed Almursaleen said.

The Indian police officials while blaming him of instigating people against Kishtwar communal violence told media men that Imam Kifayat was booked under PSA and was shifted to Kathua Jail. People of Chowgam warned that of massive agitation against the continued arrest of Imam.
