Prof Shawl wants UN chief to reaffirm Kashmiris’ birthright

Islamabad, July 10, 2014 (PPI-OT): Kashmiri scholar, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl has called upon the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, to take a notice of India’s decision on the presence of United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and reassure the Kashmiris that UN resolutions are valid and their right to self-determination cannot be jeopardized.

Professor Shawl, who also heads International Chamber for Peace and Conciliation (ICPC), in a statement issued in Islamabad said that UNMOG was posted as a consequence of UN resolutions passed by the UN Security Council.

“These resolutions have an international inter face as such it is an international agreement. No bilateral agreement can override an international agreement,” he added.

The Indian foreign office spokesperson has recently asked the UNMOGIP to vacate its office in New Delhi.
