Islamabad: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has congratulated the whole nation and members of the National Assembly on the passage of historic National Commission on Human Rights Bill.
The setting-up of the National Commission on Human Rights Bill will effectively put in place a mechanism for addressing violations committed against human rights, the Prime Minister said.
It may be recalled that the Bill has been pending since 1993 and could not be passed due to the lack of requisite support.
National Commission on Human Rights will be headed by a chairperson eligible to be a judge of the Supreme Court and the Commission would act as a civil court for redressing human rights violation. The chairperson will be appointed by the President on the advice of the Prime Minister.
The enactment of the Bill is in consonance with the PPP manifesto and commitment of the present democratic government.
The passage of Bill is expected to be widely welcomed by the Human Rights Organizations within the country and by the International Human Rights Organizations.
