Islamabad, October 09, 2012 (PPI-OT): I am pleased to learn that Postal fraternity of the Pakistan, along with the international community, is celebrating World Post Day, today, to highlight the services of this sector and its role in socio-economic development of the people.
I congratulate the postal fraternity of Pakistan and the world over on this day for their huge contributions in bringing the people together and bridging the geographical divides. It is also a day to acknowledge with gratitude the innumerable services rendered by the postal community in the service of mankind.
I also extend greetings to the Universal Postal Union on its 139thanniversary today and commend its crucial role in promoting cooperation between Governments, designated Postal Operators, Regulators and other stakeholders and also for safeguarding the interests of the postal sector worldwide in a non-partisan manner.
Its role in providing consultative and technical assistance to the developing countries in modernizing their postal operations, developing standards for an efficient global postal network and framing rules for international mail exchanges has been most commendable.
Postal service is a key component in ensuring universal access to communication. Pakistan’s unique demographic features have made it especially valuable to us. Since its inception, Pakistan Post has been providing postal services in every nook and corner of the country and selflessly serving the people. In addition to its traditional role, the Pakistan Post in recent years has also assumed agency functions on behalf of Federal and Provincial governments including in areas like banking, insurance, tax collection and collection of utility bills.
The rapid strides in communication technologies calls for strengthening and modernizing the Postal sector to enable it play a much greater role in the developmental process. I am confident that Pakistan Post is cognizant of the new realities and is well poised to meet the challenges of the future. The government of Pakistan will endeavour to modernize the postal network in accordance with the needs of the time and recommendations of UPU Congress.
Once again, I congratulate all associated with Pakistan Post and wish them success in their endeavours to serve the nation and be a strong partner in economic development of the country.
