President Mamnoon launches first Urdu-Chinese dictionary

Islamabad, May 20, 2014 (PPI-OT): President Mamnoon Hussain has said that the First Urdu-Chinese Dictionary would go a long way in consolidating the relationship between China and Pakistan, easing the journeys on the path of development and helping the two countries better address the future challenges.

The President said this during the Inauguration Ceremony of the First Urdu-Chinese Dictionary at the Fudan University, Shanghai today.

Highlighting significance of people to people contacts, the President said that peoples of the two countries, on the streets, in cities and in villages, have a strong sense of affection and love for each other.

He emphasized the need for the two countries to nurture these sentiments among future generations besides making concerted efforts to promote people to people contacts in the fields of education, culture, art, sports and media so as to anchor bilateral ties on more solid foundations.

The President said that he was pleased to visit the historic Fudan University and said that the lofty traditions of this great institution are rivalled by only few in the world, adding that Fudan University has inspired several generations of China’s leaders and scholars who have helped to build the great country and splendid society.

The President congratulated the Higher Education Press of China and Peking University on publication of the first Urdu-Chinese Dictionary and expressed delight to note that the launching of the Dictionary coincides with the 63rd anniversary of our diplomatic relations, which were formalized in May 1951.

The President termed the publication of the First Urdu-Chinese dictionary a remarkable achievement and appreciated the dedication, commitment and professionalism involved in its publication.

“In academic sense, the Dictionary bridges two languages with distinct roots and traditions and different syntax and grammar and in social and political sense, it strengthens linkages between peoples of Pakistan and China, who are like “iron brothers”, the President said.

Recalling the long historic connections between China and Pakistan, the President dilated on the fabled Silk Route and said that Famous Chinese scholars Xuan Zhuang and Fa Xian traversed the Silk Route to a famous University in Taxila, just thirty miles from our capital Islamabad.

Their travelogue, preserved in the literary epic, “Journey to the West”, is a journey between China and Pakistan, the President said and added that Pakistan and China won independence almost at the same time and that he was grown up in the formative years of our two newly independent countries.

“I am a witness to the friendship of four generations of our leaderships and I am happy that these glowing traditions have been passed to the fifth generation leadership of President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang”, the President remarked. He noted that in the last six decades, Pakistan- China friendship has overseen global upheavals and domestic changes, which he said was reflecting the resilience of our relationship.

“I have no doubt that Urdu-Chinese Dictionary will consolidate our relationship. It will ease the journeys between our two countries. I also have no doubt that Urdu-Chinese Dictionary will help us better address the challenges of our future”.

On Pak- China relations, the President said that he had strong reasons to believe that the two countries would be able to successfully carry forward the time tested and all-weather friendship between the two countries to the future generations.

“Pakistan and China shared an idealism of peaceful neighbourhood, both the countries want the region free from strife and conflict and a world embracing peace, harmony and understanding”, the President said and added that on major issues of peace and security, the two countries have complete unanimity of views.

We want peace so that we can concentrate on reducing poverty and improving lives of our peoples, he said and noted that such shared values are a platform for lasting friendship.

Besides unanimity of views on major issues, the President said that the governments in Pakistan and China have charted a clear path of deepening the strategic cooperative partnership in the next five years. On the ongoing gigantic China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project, the President said that it was a flagship project that is driving the strategic economic cooperation between our two countries.

On investment ties, the President said that many Chinese enterprises are benefiting from incentives in Pakistan for investments in various sectors including telecommunications, textile, energy and infrastructure and further said that the shared goal of economic prosperity will further strengthen our bonds in the future.

On contribution of the first Urdu-Chinese Dictionary in the development of bilateral ties, the President said that Dictionary has reinforced his optimism for the future, adding that with this invaluable work, people of the two countries can further improve their contacts and promote understanding of their distinct languages and culture.

The President commended the efforts of Professor Kong Julan and her team of distinguished experts who compiled the dictionary and expressed pleasure to note that her team included experts from both China and Pakistan.

The President also appreciated the contributions of Mr. Su Yuheng and his colleagues at Higher Education Press of China for publishing the dictionary and expressed hope that the first edition will sell like hot cakes followed by the printing of the second edition of the Dictionary.

The President is in Shanghai to represent Pakistan at the two- day Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) being held in Shanghai, China on May 20-21, 2014.

Those present on the occasion included among others Mr. Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Minister, Punjab, Syed Tariq Fatemi, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs/SAPM and Foreign Secretary, Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhary.
