Islamabad: President Asif Zardari has granted remission to 24,488 convicted prisoners during his entire tenure, Interior Minister Abdul Rehman Malik told National Assembly on Friday. In a written reply to the question of Begum Nuzhat Sadiq, he said the convicted prisoners including 20,120 male and 4368 female who have been granted remission on the auspicious occasions of Eid ul Fitr, Eid Milad un Nabi, Pakistan Day and Independence Day.
Giving province wise break-up he said 13,987 male, 4185 female prisoners belong to Punjab, while 4611 male and 142 female hails from Sindh.
And 1114 male, 41 female convicted prisoners belong to Khyber Pakhtun Khaw. Likewise 408 male prisoners from Baluchistan have also been granted remission.
He said the prisoners had been convicted on charges of Narcotics/drugs, theft, military deserter, death, 324 and 340 FCR, rape, minor crimes and arms.
In a written response to another question he said National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has registered 120,578 aliens across Pakistan and 112,000 in Karachi alone.
He said a proposal is being prepared by NADRA for establishment of Suspect Database on registration of immigrants. The illegal immigrants have not been registered by NADRA. Strong mechanism exists in NADRA which takes appropriate action against the aliens, he added.
