Islamabad, July 17, 2014 (PPI-OT): President Mamnoon Hussain reaffirmed commitment of the present government to accord top priority to the promotion of higher education in all disciplines including medical sciences and called upon the university of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University Islamabad to focus on bringing out latest and quality research in the field of Medical and allied Health Sciences so as to cope with ever growing challenges in the realm of health and medicines.
The President, who is also a Chancellor of SZABMU said this while chairing the 1st meeting of the Senate of the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) at the Aiwan-e- Sadr today. The university‘s Senate members present during the meeting included Senator Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari, Chairman Senate of Pakistan, Dr. Tariq Fazal Chudhary, MNA, Mr. M. Asghar Ch, Acting Secretary CA and DD, Prof. Javed Akram, Vice Chancellor, SZABMU, Prof. M. Amjad Chaudhry, Registrar SZABMU, Prof. Tanwir Khalique, Controller of Examinations, SZABMU, Dr. Altaf Hussain, Administrator, PIMS, Prof. Muhammad Tariq, Chairman, Department of Burns Surgery, Prof. Shahid Nawaz Malik, Chairman, Department of Cardiology, Dr. Ikram Ullah Khan, Chairman, Department of Dermatology, Prof. Zahoor Ahmed, Chairman, Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Prof. Ghias-Ud-Din Butt, Chairman, Department of Nephrology, Prof. Iqtida Haider, Chairman, Department of Neonatology, Dr. Qasim Mahmood, Chairman, Department of Oncology and Prof. Imran Sikandar Khan, Chairman, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Mr. Usman Ibrahim, minister of state for Capital Administration and Development was also present.
Underscoring the key role of the universities, the President urged the University’s management to particularly focus on the evaluation of the performance of various departments of the University as per international standards which he said would help the medical professionals and students to compete at the global level in the field of medical and allied health sciences.
The President also emphasized the need for developing and strengthening linkages of the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University with the reputed international universities and health institutes which the President said would help the university benefit from the global experiences and expertise in medical sciences.
The meeting was apprised about the visit of the medical team of SZABMU, PIMS and polyclinic to the IDPs camps in Bannu and the various health services and medical facilities and reliefs being provided to the IDPs at the camps, district headquarter hospital and the various basic health units.
The President appreciated the initiative of the SZABMU to dispatch two mobile health units along with paramedical staff and doctors for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of North Waziristan and urged the University to undertake more such initiatives to alleviate the sufferings of IDPs.
He urged them to focus besides other facilities, on polio vaccination of the children in the camps so as to contain the spread of polio disease. He advised for continuing the provision of health services to the IDPs till the situation becomes normal.
Prof. Javed Akram, Vice Chancellor, SZABMU gave an overview of the academic activities, research development and other achievements, ongoing and future projects and plans of the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University, Islamabad.
As per agenda, the 1st Senate meeting considered various names to nominate to the Syndicate of the University and after thorough deliberations appointed with consensus two deans for syndicate of the University namely Prof. Ashok Kumar, Dean Faculty of Basic Medical sciences, who is also member of the senate and senior faculty member and Prof. Anser Maxood, Dean Faculty of Dentistry and allied health sciences, who is also member of senate by virtue of Chairman, Department of Operative Dentistry.
The meeting also appointed with consensus Prof. M. Iqbal Memon, Chairman Department of Anesthesia and member of senate as member for Finance and Planning Committee of the University. Under sub- section © of section 22 of the university act, the Senate of the university is authorized to appoint or nominate members to the syndicate and other authorities of the University.
The senate members of the University thanked the President for chairing the1st senate meeting of the SZABMU and assured that the University will continue to work for promoting quality research and achieving excellence in the field of medical and allied health sciences. The President assured all out support and patronage to the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Medical University in its educational pursuits and plans and the promotion of health education in the country.
