Islamabad, April 27, 2015 (PPI-OT): President Mamnoon Hussain has said that diplomats must understand the opportunities and challenges offered by evolving global developments. The President stated that the study of diplomacy and international relations is of critical importance for countries like Pakistan.
The President was speaking at the Graduation Ceremony of 34th Specialized Diplomatic Course at Foreign Service Academy here in Islamabad on Monday.
The President said that today’s diplomats should not only be experts in international law and politics but also in public and economic diplomacy. Their skill sets should not just be in the art of negotiations and public speaking; they should also be prepared to navigate the electronic, print and social media and the 24/7 cycle of breaking news, added the President.
The President said that contemporary diplomacy has become more complex and challenging adding that this complexity has grown with the rise of new dimensions and the intensification of competition for resources and influence. The President stated that research in issues of global significance and learning of foreign languages and cultures will prepare young minds of today for the challenges they will face when they enter the field of diplomacy.
The President said that diplomats are the representatives of a country in foreign lands. The President noted that Foreign Service Academy (FSA), being a premiere institution of learning in diplomacy and international relations, has produced some outstanding diplomats who have represented Pakistan at the global and regional level with distinction and honour. The President expressed confidence that Pakistan will continue to be represented in the tradition of excellence as FSA remains committed to producing diplomats who are in sync with the requirements of the day.
