Islamabad, June 17, 2013 (PPI-OT): In order to review the existing levels of preparedness and contingency planning for upcoming monsoon season, the Governments of all the federating units of the country, in coordination with NDMA, are actively pursuing a proactive approach to disaster management.
In this connection a high level meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Sind, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, in Karachi on 14 Jun 2013 that was attended by, among others, members of provincial cabinet, Chairman NDMA, Major General Saeed Aleem and Secretaries of all the key departments. While the presentations highlighted the preparedness levels certain key deficiencies too came to the fore which the CM directed to be rectified.
Chairman NDMA also attended a preparatory meeting of PDMA KPK where issues of preparedness and measures to address the current flooding were discussed. Thereafter the Chairman NDMA, along with DG PDMA, also visited some of the flood affected areas of KPK.
Same day i.e. 17 June a similar high level meeting was chaired by Mr. Javed Aslam, Chief Secretary, Punjab, at Lahore that was attended by all senior officials of relevant provincial and federal departments including NDMA, PDMA, PMD, FFC, Pak Army and provincial departments. All departments particularly PMD, PDMA Punjab, irrigation and health departments and divisional commissioners gave detailed presentations on preparedness measure undertaken and contingency plans put in place for managing any possible disaster situation. The Chief Secretary gave directions for further consolidating their preparedness levels.
Similar high level meeting has already been held in AJK while the presentation of plans of GB and Balochistan are scheduled for next week. These meeting are a prelude to upcoming two day National Conference for Monsoon Preparedness and Contingency Planning, scheduled on 26-27 June 2013 in NDMA Islamabad, wherein Pakistan Met Department and relevant Disaster Management Authorities including Federal Agencies as well concerned agencies of UN, INGOs and INGOs will share details of their contingency plans with other stakeholders.
