Islamabad, May 17, 2012 (PPI-OT): Technological advancements in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have created numerous opportunities for people around the world. Increased human interconnection and the pace and depth of the evolution of human ways of life, with no historical precedent, has transformed our lives. ICTs drive trade, education, and hence improve the living standards of our citizen.
As the role of the ICTs has evolved into an enabler of the growth of civilization, it is very important to provide universal, affordable and equitable access to ICTs, especially for women and girls to eliminate gender discrimination.
This year, World Telecommunication and Information Society (WTIS) Day is being celebrated worldwide on this day with the focus on women and girls in ICTs. In Pakistan, women are getting better opportunities and are excelling in every field. ICTs are not only providing socio-economic developments for women but are also empowering them by giving access to equal opportunities.
E-education, distance learning programs and internet are providing unique opportunities for women and girls to get quality education. E-commerce has expanded horizons for home based small and medium businesses to compete globally. E-health initiatives, like Tele-medicine, are providing safer environment for people living in far flung areas and making life safer for mothers. Mobile communication and social networks has provided many alternatives for women and girls to communicate with the world, which enable them to know their equal rights.
Government of Pakistan has accorded highest priority to the development of ICT infrastructure and applications for the provision of quality services, education, employment generation, and women empowerment. Ministry of Information Technology (MoIT) through, Virtual University, Universal Service Fund Company and National ICT R and D Fund Company has initiated a range of successful programs to promote ICT opportunities for women and girls to achieve these goals.
The Virtual University of Pakistan utilizes modern Information and Communication Technologies to provide affordable world class online education to the people of Pakistan. Universal Service Fund (USF) Company, a success story for Pakistan, has launched major projects for the establishment of community tele-centers and tele-medicine in un-served and underserved areas.
Since 2007, National ICT R and D Fund has been offering fully-funded National ICT scholarships for undergraduate degrees in ICT related disciplines in prominent universities of the country. Recently, four ICT blocks have been established by National ICT R and D Fund in women Universities and Colleges. Several IT Universities are in the pipeline as well.
I urge parents and civil society to provide quality Information and Communication Technologies education to their children, especially to the girls, so that they can reap maximum benefits from the available opportunities around the world.
