PPI Original Text (PPI-OT) – Affidavit required as proof of marriage from Hindu Women

Karachi, May 23, 2012 (PPI-OT): National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) inserted as new Regulation 14 in national Database and Registration Authority (Application for National Identity Card) Regulation 2002 on the directions of honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan, As per notification an applicant, who is a married Pakistani Hindu woman, needs only to provide an affidavit as a proof of marriage while applying for the first time for a computerized national identity card (CNIC) with her husband name on it.

NADRA previously continued this through a policy but on the instructions of honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan this policy has been incorporated in its Regulations, to ease the processing of CNIC’s of Hindu community.

The statement said such affidavit shall also be countersigned by her husband in acknowledgement of the contents of the affidavit. No further proof of marriage shall be sought from such applicant. NADRA spokesman said computerized national identity card is the right of every Pakistani irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

NADRA spokesman also stated that NADRA has been strictly following government policy that minorities should not be discriminated on the basis of religion or sect whether it would be the provision of registration services or employment at authority.
