Karachi, August 26, 2015 (PPI-OT):All stakeholders of polio eradication including Sindh health department, UNICEF, WHO, and other partners have agreed upon to eliminate polio virus in Sindh as well in Pakistan, because Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries in the world where 29 and 6 cases have been reported respectively in 2014. In Karachi last polio case was reported in October 2014 and decided to increase health immunity level among the children through new vaccine IPV.
Speakers were unanimously hopeful that there will be no polio virus in Pakistan very soon. Speaking at launching ceremony inactivated polio in EPI programme here in a local hotel, Sindh Health Minister Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar has said that the introduction of IPV is a major landmark to accelerate polio eradication and secure a lasting polio-free world. The polio virus still threatens the society, but he strongly believes that any threat can be defeated by a noble mission if we have strong practical commitment.
He told the audience that with the support of WHO, UNICEF and other partners Sindh Health Department had trained hundreds of health care providers including Pediatricians, doctors, paramedics and vaccination staff. Secretary Health Dr. Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo said that health department had done all work to provide logistics and other facilities to make the launch of IPV a success and they were trying to reach every child to administer new polio vaccine.
Dr. Tamaskan team leader WHO said that new vaccine had reduced polio virus in many countries of the world and Sindh province has shown remarkable performance and only one polio case had been reported this year in February.
While speaking on the occasion Dr. Amjad Ansari representative of UNICEF informed that Sindh was the second province in Pakistan where new polio vaccine IPV was being launched. He was of the opinion that UNICEF was trying to protect the rights of the children and eradication of polio as well. Director General Health Sindh Hassan Murad Shah said that the department was taking keen interest in eradication of polio. Dr. Mazhar Khamisani, Dr. Sallah and Special Secretary Health Dr. Riaz Memon also spoke on the occasion.
