PLO’s Ashrawi: US shift on two-state solution ‘doesn’t make sense’

Ramallah (IINA) – Executive Committee member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Dr. Hanan Ashrawi said US President Donald Trump’s break with decades of support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is “irresponsible” and does not advance peace.

Ashrawi was quoted by AFP as saying: “This does not make sense.”

“This is not a responsible policy and it does not serve the cause of peace. They cannot just say that without an alternative,” she added.

On the eve of White House talks between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a senior White House official said the United States would no longer seek to dictate the terms of any eventual peace settlement by insisting on a Palestinian state alongside Israel, but would support whatever the two sides agree to together.

“If US President Donald Trump is trying to create alternative realities, then he should spell out what the options are – a one-state solution would require equal rights and citizenship for all, unless he is advocating an apartheid state,” Ashrawi said Tuesday in a statement carried by Palestinian News Agency WAFA.

“However, a situation of perpetual occupation would only generate greater extremism and violence within the region and beyond,” she stressed.

The PLO official said the two-state solution is a longstanding policy of the US and has global consensus as a basic requirement for peace.

“Accommodating the most extreme and irresponsible elements in Israel and in the White House is no way to make responsible foreign policy,” Ashrawi added.
