Karachi: The government intends to outsource metering, billing and collection to the private sector in order to improve the efficiency of power sector while considering the inability of Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) to perform these duties efficiently.
According to Alfalah Securities Limited, the Committee of cabinet also took several decisions in order to improve the performance of the power sector which includes that Pepco would be dissolved by the end of October and would be replaced by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) while the power generation and distribution companies would be handed over to professional management teams.
It was also decided that the financial systems in Discos and Gencos would be revamped while the establishment of National Power Control Centre (NPCC) would be streamlined. Moreover, 100% recovery of bills payment would be ensured and connections of defaulting consumers would be disconnected after 45 days of non-payment. The Committee also informed that a uniform single tariff would be introduced and the mechanism for tariff determination would also be simplified.
