Islamabad: Pakistan’s Goodwill Ambassador for Women Empowerment, Ms. Fiza Batool Gilani held a bilateral meeting with Mrs. Neela Gangadharan, Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development, India on the side-lines of the 56th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women, being held at the UN Headquarters New York, says a press release received here today from New York.
Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister and Ms. Bushra Zulqarnain, Member of the National Commission on Status of Women were also present in the meeting.
The two sides discussed various issues pertaining to the rights of women in the two countries as well as relevant social sector reforms to improve their lot. Importance of enhancing regional cooperation was highlighted by both sides in the meeting.
Ms. Gilani underscored the importance accorded by Government of Pakistan to the rights of women in Pakistan and highlighted the numerous steps taken for the political, economic and social empowerment of women in the past few years.
She underlined the need for better cooperation between the two sides on the issues pertaining to women empowerment, through enhancing interaction at the bilateral as well as at the level of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
Mrs. Gangadharan thanked the Goodwill Ambassador for sharing of views and highlighted the relevant efforts made by her country to improve the socio-economic lot of women and children. She also welcomed the idea of enhanced bilateral and regional cooperation on these subjects. She further expressed India’s desire to work closely with the relevant institutions for the rights of women in Pakistan in order to benefit from mutual experiences.
