Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Muttahida Qaumi Movement to comply code of conduct for electioneering in NA-246

Karachi, April 01, 2015 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Muttahida Qaumi Movement have agreed on a code of conduct for electioneering in NA-246, Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat Ul Ebad Khan said during a press conference here at Governor House Wednesday.

The press conference was held following a meeting between the leaders of PTI and MQM to pacify the activists of the two parties as the contestants prepare for by-election to NA-246 on April 23. Talking to reporters, Dr Ebad flanked by PTI and MQM leaders said all political parties should play a responsible role.

“I have requested both the parties to refrain from provocation and not to use derogatory words against each other’s leaders,” Dr Ebad said. In reply to a question, he said PTI can hold its rally in Jinnah Ground situated in Karachi’s Azizabad area or wherever it wishes to and that absolute protection would be provided.

About MQM chief’s statement issued early Wednesday morning, the Governor said party workers and the public have been advised to refrain from involvement in any sort of provocation. “He also wanted there to be a code of conduct which every candidate and party would have to adhere to, in order to facilitate democratic and peaceful elections,” said the Governor.

The Governor sounded hopeful that political parties will take responsibility for, and contribute in any way they can, to maintain peace in Karachi. PTI’s Arif Alvi said his party wishes to contest these elections in a peaceful manner and it has also agreed not to cross the line when criticising each other.

In reply to a question, he said PTI and its workers as well as supporters would respect and maintain sanctity of the “martyrs’ memorial” situated at Azizabad’s Jinnah Ground. PTI leader Imran Ismail, gearing up to contest elections from NA-246 constituency, appreciated MQM chief Altaf Hussain’s statement trying to defuse the situation. “We appreciate the fact that he has welcomed PTI and in the given situation no party should make this a matter of ego,” he said.
