Islamabad: On 1st November 2011 Pakistan has taken over from Japan as the NESA (North East and South Asia) Coordinator of ASEM (Asia Europe Meeting) for one year. This was decided by the ASEM Senior Officials Meeting, held in Tokyo, on 28 October 2011.
Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), is an intercontinental dialogue process – comprising 46 countries of Asia and Europe plus European Commission and ASEAN Secretariat – to promote cooperation between Asia and Europe. ASEM deliberates regional and international foreign policy and security issues.
It also concerns itself with matters related to climate-change, disaster-management, disarmament, trans-national crime, sea-piracy, cyber-security, food-security as well as socio-political subjects such as interfaith-dialogue, migration, finance, work, employment and education.
As ASEM’s NESA Coordinator, Pakistan will pursue ASEM activities, with other ASEM Coordinators, from Europe and ASEAN.
