Pakistan Steel Re-Rolling Mills Association calls for restoration of electricity, gas supply to steel mills

Lahore, November 19, 2012 (PPI-OT): The Vice Chairman, Pakistan Steel Re-Rolling Mills Association (PSRMA), Mian Murad Ashraf Monday called for immediate restoration of supply of electricity and gas to the steel mills as their suspension had deprived lakhs of steel industry workers of their jabs besides causing huge financial loss to the millers and the government alike.

In a statement issued here, the Vice Chairman (Lahore Circle) of Pakistan Steel Re-Rolling Mills Association said that Steel Millers were shocked by the abrupt electricity suspension because they were already without gas and unable to understand logic behind such thoughtless decisions.

The PSRMA vice chairman said that it was a fact that most of the days of a month the gas remains suspended and during the time it is restored, its low pressure does not permit the mills to start productions.

He said that the government should implement some innovative methodology to overcome the low pressure phenomenon.

Murad Ashraf said that till now the industry has retained the workforce, despite closures due to electricity outages. “How the industrialists could continue paying their workers while industries remain closed”.

He said that it was not only give bad name to the government but might create law and order situation if millions jobless workers took to the streets.

Vice Chairman PSRMA questioned the government as to why the industries are being targeted when the trade and industry is the back bone of the economy.

Mian Murad Ashraf urged the government to fulfill its promise regarding equitable supply of electricity to all parts of the country as the discrimination with some parts particularly with the industry in Lahore is damaging steel industry beyond repair.

He said that at a time when furnaces and re-rolling mills have already laid off workers and are operating with the skeleton staff because of non-supply of gas, the sudden suspension of electricity has sent a wave of shock to the workers and owners.

He said that it would have been wiser on the part of the government, if it had devised some foolproof strategy to stop power and gas pilferages that is one of the major causes of the shortage of these utilities.
