Pakistan signs two loan agreements with Asian Development Bank

Islamabad: The Government of Pakistan has signed two loan agreements with Asian Development Bank (ADB), here on Wednesday.

The first agreement “Punjab Irrigated Agriculture Investment Program –Tranche II that aims at provision of reliable irrigation supplies to the lower Chenab Canal command area which is expected to be completed by 30.06.2016. The Project comprises of the following components:

a) Construction of a new barrage complex to be located approximately 275 meters downstream of the existing Khanki headworks on the River Chenab, which new barrage complex shall include a main weir and under sluices; gats and hosting arrangement; and an operating deck and access road bridge;

b) Construction of a canal head regulator adjacent to the new barrage and a lead channel to the existing Lower Chenab Canal;

c) The dismantling of the existing Khanki headworks; and

d) Provision of implementation support to the Project Executing agency for construction, supervision and management expenses of PMO Barrage.

This agreement was signed by Mr. Irfan Illahi, Secretary Irrigation Punjab while Country Director Werner E. Liepach signed on behalf of ADB.

The second agreement “Power Transmission Enhancement Investment Program-Tranche III” which is expected to be completed by 31.12.2015 will enhance the efficiency of the overall power transmission system and provide an adequate and reliable power supply to a greater number of commercial, industrial and residential consumers.

a) A new 600 km 500 kv transmission line form Jamshoro to Moro, Daudu and Rahim Yar Khan, a new 500 kV grid station at Moro and expansion/augmentation of 3 existing 500 kV grid stations at Jamshoro, Dadu and Rahim Yar Khan;

b) A new 125 km 220kV transmission line from the UCH-II power Plant to the 220 grid station at Sibbi, and a connection between the UCH-I and UCH-II power plants;

c) A new 200 kV grid station at Manshera; and

d) Procurement of transmission system equipment.

Secretary Economic Affairs Division Abdul Wajid Rana signed this agreement on behalf of Government of Pakistan while on behalf of Asian Development Bank Mr. Werner E. Liepach, Country Director signed the agreement.
