Islamabad, November 21, 2013 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) celebrated the World Science Day (WSD) on November 21 in a befitting manner by arranging different activities.
Eminent scientist Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed was the Chief Guest at inaugural ceremony of the event. The other prominent personalities who attended the function included Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) Secretary Mr. Kamran Ali Qureshi, PSF Chairman Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto, UNESCO Country Director K.K. Nagatta, Quaid-e-Azam University Vice Chancellor / Rector Islamic International University Dr. Masoom Ysainzai. A large number of scientists, teachers and students were also present on this occasion.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed spoke on the importance of science and technology in development of nations and its use for the benefit of humanity not as for its destruction. He called upon the students to develop their passion for science and adopt it as a career.
He said to achieve scientific development and use it for the betterment of mankind, Pakistan along with other countries of the world observes the “World Science Day for Peace and Development” on November 10 every year.
He said the purpose of World Science Day is to renew the commitment to science for peace and development and to stress the reasonable use of science for the benefit of society as postulated by the World Conference on Science in 1999. UNESCO during the General Conference at its 31st session (2001) had proclaimed November 10 each year as “World Science Day for Peace and Development”. Dr Ashfaq said initially, the proposal was given by him.
MoST Secretary Mr. Kamran Ali Qureshi said no one can deny the importance of science in socio-economic development. He said on behalf of MoST, PSF is organizing different activities such as essay and poster competitions and science caravan exhibitions all over the country to celebrate the day and highlight importance of science and technology.
PSF Chairman Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto welcomed the participants and distinguished guests. He said the WSD is observed all over the world on November 10 to mark the breath taking achievements of man in science and technology and PSF observes this day every year in a befitting manner.
He said due to Muharram this year PSF planned to celebrate this day on November 21 so that maximum number of people and students could actively participate in it. He appreciated the UNESCO collaboration in arranging different activities regarding celebration of the World Science Day.
He said since declaration of the day Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Ministry of Science and Technology, celebrates this day on regular basis. Dr. Ibupoto said PSF is the apex organization for popularization, promotion and funding of scientific and technological research.
UNESCO Country Director K.K. Nagatta said today we are celebrating the World Science Day. She said peace is pre-requisite for development and the WSD reminds us about use of science for peace and socio-economic development. Dr. Nagatta said this year’s WSD theme “Science for Water Cooperation: Sharing Data, Knowledge and Innovations” highlights the key role played by Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in addressing global water challenges.
QAU VC Dr. Masoom Yasinzai talked at length about importance of science and its development in different fields.
The major activities arranged by PSF on this occasion included a seminar on WSD, award of prizes to winners of science poster, Speech and other competitions etc and science caravan exhibitions in schools and colleges across the country.
