Pakistan-Indonesia working together to end the scourge of militancy

Islamabad: Pakistan has been achieved through a peaceful struggle by Muslims of the sub-continent, backed by the power of ballot. We wish to see Pakistan free from the menace of militancy and extremism and flourish as a peaceful country based on the democratic ideals of father of the nation, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, says a press release received here today from Jakarta.

These views were expressed by Ambassador Sanaullah while addressing the Independence Day ceremony held at the Pakistan Embassy, Indonesia on Sunday.

The Ambassador emphasized that it was due to their distinct culture that Muslims of the sub-continent demanded a separate homeland where they could lead their lives according to the tenants of Islam. This fact must never be ignored and confused with some rhetoric advocating commonalty of a sub-continent culture. He said with collective thinking and approach in our lives, we could achieve the desired level of progress and development for Pakistan as envisioned by the Quaid. We should remain steadfast in following our faith, he said.

Later talking to Indonesian media, the Ambassador made special mention of the Pakistan-Indonesia cooperation on combating terrorism. He said both countries shared intelligence info and in the form of a joint working group had a mechanism in place for anti-terror coordination. He said just last week, Pakistan handed over Umar Patek to Indonesian authorities. Patek was the mastermind behind Bali bombing and Indonesia was grateful to Pakistan for nabbing the most wanted terrorist.

He said it was unfortunate that both countries were having to face this grave problem but with concerted efforts they could defeat this scourge. To a question, he said, Pakistan was able to destroy the terrorist networks and terrorists were on the run. But he added the war on terror was a battle of ideas also.” We have to bring forth a better philosophy that aims at prosperity for all, a philosophy which can counter the terrorist mindset” he said. He felicitated all Pakistani brethren on the joyous occasion and also thanked the Indonesian friends for joining in the festivities.

The Ambassador also on this occasion announced launching of a new data base of the Pakistanis residing in Indonesia enabling the Embassy to interact with them on various issues, particularly consul matters.

Earlier the Ambassador performed the flag hoisting ceremony marking the Independence Day of Pakistan. Messages of the President, Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister, Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani were read out by Deputy Head of Mission, Syed Sajjad Haider. Besides a large number of Pakistanis, Embassy officials and their families, Indonesian guests also attended the ceremony.
