Pakistan Cyclists to compete in 33rd Asian Cycling Championship in New Delhi

Lahore, February 19, 2013 (PPI-OT): The President, Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF), Mr. Munawar Baseer Ahmad has announced that the Pakistan National cycling team will take part in 33rd Asian Cycling Championship to be held from March 5 – 17, 2013 in New Delhi, India.

President PCF informed that, in order to prepare the cyclist for the competition, a camp has been in progress for the last 6 weeks in Lahore where the cyclists from the different units are staying at Pakistan Coaching Center. Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has provided the facilities for the cyclists.

The PSB has also agreed to provide NOC to the cycling team, as the PCF is recognized by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) as well as Union Cyclist International (UCI), and Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC). Participation invitation for Pakistan cycling team was received from the ACC’s Organizing Committee last month and the event will be hosted by the Cycling Federation of India.

Mr. Munawar Baseer informed that the PCF has formulated Selection Committee which is headed by Former Secretary PCF, Mr. Ijaz Ali Sheikh (Senior Cyclist and Ex Champion). The Selection Committee member includes Mr. Tariq Alvi (National Cyclist), Mr. Shafiq Cheema (former National Champion and National Cycling Color Holder), Mr. Nusrat Khan (former Int’l Cyclist and former Champion Tour-de-Pakistan) and Mr. Ishtiaq Mubeen (President Technical Association). Secretary to the Selection Committee will be Sardar Nazakat Ali (National Cycling Color Holder).

A probable list has been prepared which includes cyclists from Pakistan Army, SSGC, Higher Education Commission (HEC), Sindh, Punjab and KPK province. Initial list of probable have been drawn up of the following national level cyclists.

In the men senior category the following cyclists are training in the camp;

ASif Junior Abdullah Aslam Ghulam Abbad Imran Shoqat

In the men under-23 category, the following cyclists are participating in the camp;

Sajid Ali Waqas Mehboob Awais Ali Sultan Aftab
Abid Zeeshan Ali

In the men junior category, Muhammad Sultan is training in the camp.

In the women Senior category, the following 3 women cyclist who have shown good performance in the camp have been added. The vice president of the women wing Dr. Fauzia Siddiqui is been in close contact with the women cyclists to get them prepared for the upcoming Asian championship.

In the women junior category, Anam Mahmood is training in the camp.

The Secretary, PCF, Syed Azhar Ali Shah has informed that since the WAPDA and Railway cyclists have not joined the training camp, they have been deemed ineligible for the selection in the National Cycling Team. He informed that several notices were issued, however their cyclists failed to turn-up with the due formalities and permission for the camp.

Mr. Azhar Ali Shah further informed that the 60th edition of the National Cycling Championship will be held from 20th February in Lahore. The performance of all cyclists including those in the National Championship and those from the training camp will be monitored closely and their timings recorded.

The Selection Committee will meet on Monday 25th after the conclusion of the National Cycling Championship to finalize the names for the Pakistan National Team. It is expected that the Pakistan squad will consist of about 10 male cyclists and 2 women cyclists. Col. (R) Raashid Ahmed, Manager Sports, Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) has been nominated as the Manager for the National Cycling Team which will be accompanying by the National Cycling Coaches Nusrat Khan and Sardard Nazakat Ali.

Mr. Azhar Ali Shah further informed that the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has committed to provide partial funding for the cycling contingent. Additional funds and support have been committed by several corporate bodies including SSGC, Lucky Cement, Candyland, and Service Industries.

He added that we are expecting cycling contingent to obtain positions in multiple events and the women cyclists also who have shown extremely good performance and are also expected to obtain position in the Asian cycling championship.
