Islamabad, July 18, 2012 (PPI-OT): Mr. Cemil Cicek, Speaker of the Grant Turkish National Assembly has said that relations between Turkey and Pakistan were historic and deeply embedded in peoples’ hearts and minds of Turkish people. He said that his country would continue its unflinching support to Pakistan whenever required. He made these remarks in his meeting along with his three-member parliamentary delegation with Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly here in Parliament House, today.
Mr. Cemil Cicek termed the friendship between his country and Pakistan “a historic association that is deeply imbedded in our people’s hearts and minds”. He said that Turkey considers Pakistan a brother and would extend unflinching support in addressing problems confronted by its brotherly country.
He said that he was a staunch believer of parliamentary diplomacy; therefore, enhancing interaction at parliamentary level could further cement the existing brotherly ties between both the countries. He said that Turk-Pakistan Friendship group in both the Parliaments could play important roles in furtherance of this cause.
He said that his government has taken various initiatives to enhance economic cooperation with Pakistan for mutual benefit of both the countries. He thanked the Speaker for warm welcome extended to him and his delegation on his arrival at Parliament House.
Dr. Fehmida Mirza said that time immemorial relations between both the brotherly countries were intertwined in religious and historic bonds and Pakistan and Turkey were friends now and forever. She said that it was the desire of incumbent Pakistani leadership to further cement these relations through cooperation in diverse fields. She termed Mr. Cicek’s visit a step forward in consolidating existing exceptional ties of Pakistan with Turkey.
The Speaker lauded relentless support of Government and people of Turkey in the aftermath of the fateful natural calamities in years 2008, 2010 and 2011 which effected large number of people throughout the country.
She stressed the need for continued assistance to Pakistan in seeking sustainable solutions to its current economic problems, particularly in the energy sector besides enhancing the trade and economic ties between both the countries since immense economic potentials exist in Pakistan.
The Speaker said that frequent interaction between the parliamentarians and the people of Pakistan and Turkey would further strengthen the existing brotherhood between the two countries. She agreed that parliamentarians of the two sides could play a meaningful role in the region as “parliamentary diplomacy could enable the real policy makers to understand each-others’ points of view better.
The Speaker suggested for establishment of a parliamentary group at ECO level and replicating the model of a Women Caucus on the pattern of National Assembly of Pakistan at regional level. Dr. Fehmida Mirza also recommended for sharing the legislation carried out by both the parliaments regarding women issues and public good besides collaboration between Legislative Capacity building Institutes of Pakistan and Turkey.
Earlier, Turkish Speaker planted a slapping of Magnolia in the Parliament Lawn after his arrival at Parliament House and later visited the Women Parliamentary Caucus.
