Rawalpindi: Pakistan and Maldives must boost up their cooperation in all walks of life. It was expressed by foreign Minister of the Republic of Maldives Mr. Ahmad Naseem during a call on meeting with the Defence Minister Ch. Ahmad Mukhtar here in Defence Ministry.
The Foreign Minister of Maldives is on his visit to Pakistan in connection with upcoming SAARC Summit scheduled to be held in Maldives in November this year. He apprised the Defence Minister of various sectors including Defence, Health, Tourism and trade etc.
He expressed his desire to get Pakistan’s special assistance in these sectors including many others to help Maldives progress. It also merits a mention here that Military cooperation between the two countries started in 1984 and since then Pakistan has been providing military training facilities to Maldives on gratis basis. Besides being Muslim countries both Pakistan and Maldives are also members of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
The Foreign Minister was especially concerned about the growing security challenges to the SAARC region. He also stressed upon improved ties between Pakistan and India for the sustained stability of the South Asian region. He was well aware of the fact that the region could not prosper without Indo-Pak friendship. The Defence Minister fully endorsed his impartial views.
He also added that Pakistan and India are in terms of trade with each other, but to very minimal extent. Trade could be enhanced manifold provided the two countries come closer while setting aside their major concerns.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that SAARC platform must be used for greater ties amongst the member countries. He also suggested that a uniform policy must be devised in the coming SAARC summit to bring peace and prosperity in the region. He also unearthed his desire to bring “Promotion of cricket in Maldives” on the agenda of the upcoming summit for rest of the members countries except Bhutan have good Cricket teams.
He said that sports and media can play pivotal in softening the grounds for nations to build greater ties. He also stressed upon bringing people of both the countries closer through enhanced cooperation in tourism and cultural exchanges.
The Defence Minister Ch. Ahmad Mukhtar ensured Pakistan’s full support and cooperation towards progress and development of the Republic of Maldives. He also thanked the foreign Minister for his sincere approach towards the peace and stability of the SAARC region as a whole.
The foreign minister also extended invitation to the Defence Minister to visit Maldives soon, which was cordially accepted by the later. In the end, both the Ministers exchanged gifts while thanking each other to formally conclude the call on meeting.
