Pak-US “One-Health Fellowship Program” inaugurated by Federal Education Minister

Islamabad, March 30, 2017 (PPI-OT):Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training, Engr. Muhammad Baligh ur Rehman was Chief Guest at the Inaugural Session of “One-Health Fellowship Program” jointly organized by Pakistan Academy of Sciences (PAS) and U.S. National Academy of Sciences (US-NAS) here on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister appreciated the collaborative efforts of PAS and US-NAS and said that it is promising to see academic institutions working together and sharing knowledge and technology to solve global issues. He said that inter-disciplinary research is need of the hour and solutions to contemporary issues can only be worked out through an integrated, holistic and collaborative approach.

One-Health Research Fellowship initiative recognizes the significance of this approach, he said. Minister said that present government acknowledges the importance of research and development; which is evidenced by the highest amount of research grant given by government to Universities in the country’s history. He said that government is also focused on teaching of Mathematics and Science subjects in schools. “We are participating in the TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) assessment program in its 2019 Cycle which will guide our efforts for further improving Mathematics and Science curriculum in schools”, he said.

“One-Health” concept recognizes that the health of humans is connected to the health of animals and the environment and that an integrated approach is needed to control and prevent diseases. The One-Health Fellowship Program is a 12-month research program for capacity building of early to mid-career scientists from Pakistan wherein Pakistani scientists will be paired with US experts/mentors to work on One-Health related research at national and international laboratories.

Five scientists from across the country have been selected, after rigorous tests and interviews, to proceed for research under the program. The program is aimed at solving global health issues through international, collaborative and multidisciplinary approach.
