OIC labor ministers affirm commitment to reduce unemployment rates

Jeddah The labor ministers of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have said they are working to reduce unemployment rates in member states that stood at 7.4 percent in 2016, which is higher than the global rate.

The ministers stressed in their communique, issued at the end of the Fourth Islamic Conference of Labor Ministers (ICLM) in Jeddah on Thursday, that the issue of employment is primary and essential for the well-being of peoples and economic growth. They reiterated commitment to further implement OIC Framework for Cooperation on Labor, Employment and Social Protection and other OIC decisions on labor, employment and social issues.

Also in the final communique, the ministers welcomed the adoption of the Draft OIC Labor Market Strategy and the Draft OIC Agreement on Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) of Skilled Workforce, aimed at facilitating intra-OIC skilled labor mobility. They further expressed their appreciation of the efforts made to establish the OIC Labor Center in Baku, Azerbaijan, which be the OIC’s newest specialized institution.

The ministers emphasized the need to create employment opportunities for vulnerable groups, especially the youth and women, noting that work in that direction remains a major objective of the OIC and an integral part of its development agenda.

In the communique, the labor ministers reaffirmed their commitment to implementing a comprehensive strategy to facilitate the transition from school to work, promoting good employment opportunities and vocational training, as well as taking actions to achieve equal opportunities and promote entrepreneurial initiatives.
