Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Dr. Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen called on the international community to act towards ensuring necessary protection for international navigation in the Red Sea and to counter Houthi piracy.
This came in Al-Othaimeen’s opening statement at the Meeting of the Permanent Representatives held Wednesday at the headquarters of the OIC General Secretariat, at the request of Saudi Arabia to discuss Houthi militias’ attacks on two Saudi oil tankers and their targeting of freedom of navigation and international trade across the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea.
The secretary general stated that “the Houthi group, which did not hesitate to target ‘Makkah Al-Mukarramah’; the holiest place on earth, also targeted two Saudi oil tankers in the Strait of Bab al-Mandab in a series of terrorist acts against the territory of Saudi Arabia and its interests and residents.
Al-Othaimeen affirmed the OIC’s strong condemnation of the Houthi militias for targeting international navigation, causing harm to the interests of all world countries. He reiterated the Organization’s support for and full solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the face of terrorism and its support for all the measures taken by the Kingdom to preserve its security, stability and territorial integrity.
The OIC chief commended the efforts of the leadership of the Coalition Supporting the Legitimacy in Yemen, in coordination with the international community, to secure continued freedom of maritime navigation and international trade across Bab al-Mandab and maintain regional and international security.
He also reaffirmed the OIC’s backing for the UN efforts to reach a political solution to the Yemeni crisis, to support the legitimate state authorities and to provide more humanitarian and development assistance.
The secretary general further praised the support and humanitarian assistance provided by the government of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to the Yemeni people. Meanwhile, he called on all the OIC member states to continue to provide political, security, economic and financial support to the Yemeni government to address the humanitarian challenges and reconstruction efforts.
