Islamabad: The Honourable Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar has taken serious notice of a news item appearing in today’s “Dateline Islamabad” captioned “ASMA, HAQQANI THREATENED” wherein the prominent lawyer and human rights activist Ms. Asma Jahangir has been reported to have stated that she is being threatened along with one of her clients, Mr. Hussain Haqqani.
The Advisor, while taking notice of this act, condemned it and expressed his concern over the threats. The Advisor has written to the Minister for Interior, Chief Minister, IG Punjab and IG Islamabad to thoroughly investigate the matter so that the culprits can be brought to justice. He has also urged to provide foolproof security to Ms. Asma Jahangir and her family members so that any untoward incident can be avoided.
The Advisor considers these threats as violation of fundamental rights like the right to security of person (Article-9), the right to fair trial (Article 10-A), freedom of trade, business or profession (Article 18) and freedom of speech (Article-19). It is really tragic because such incidents are tarnishing the image of Pakistan and spreading a sense of insecurity and uncertainty in the society.
