Karachi, December 20, 2012 (PPI-OT): The new pumping station built at Dhabeji Pumping Complex would provide 100 million gallons daily of additional water to Karachi said Managing Director Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Misbahuddin Farid. The project would cost 1 Billion and 280 millions approved by Government of Sindh on special request of KW and SB.
He said that normally such projects take up to 3 years to complete however, due to the importance of this project it would be completed within 1 year working 24 hours a day. He was briefing the Governor of Sindh at the inauguration ceremony of the new pumping station.
He said that the water supply system in Karachi was established in 1884 and is until date in use. Governor of Sindh has approved 100 million rupees for improving this system and the work would be completed before summers. More than 970 million rupees has also been assigned by the Governor of Sindh for the betterment of water supply to be spent on different projects.
The pumping station at Dhabeji was established in 1960 with 6 pumps ran by diesel. These pumps have outlived their technical life and due to the severe conditions KW and SB kept them running by repairing these motors and pumps so that the citizens may not suffer.
Moreover, the constant repair was costing heavily to the institution yet disrupting the supply every now and then. These conditions forced us to inform Governor of Sindh Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad about the lack of funds request help from Government of Sindh.
He also said that KW and SB ensures swift provision of water supply and sewerage disposal but we do not receive any betterment taxes or commercialization charges. He said that building and construction of high rises never stops in the city of light but KW and SB does not receive any taxes.
Whereas, Federal and Provincial Institutions owe more than 22 billion to KW and SB. Moreover, KW and SB is the only water supply institution that pays its own electricity bill whereas Provincial Governments pay their respective water supplier’s electric bills.
He stated that PC-I of the project was completed up on the directions of Governor of Sindh Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad Khan and thank Governor of Sindh, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Minister Local Bodies Agha Siraj Durrani and Haq Parast Members of Sindh assembly who did not only approved the PC-I of the project but also granted funds of 1 Billion 280 million rupees for the project.
He said that KW and SB holds the honour of running and maintaining the largest pumping station in Asia despite the limited budget and resources. Dhabeji Pumping Complex provides 550 million gallons of water daily to the citizens of Karachi. This water reaches Karachi through 3 pumping phases covering a distance of 200 kilometres.
The network that enables KW and SB to ensure this provision is a complex one and costs the institution heavily on account of running and maintenance charges. Employees of KW and SB work around the clock to ensure the swift provision of water to the citizens regardless of the weather or public holidays such as Eid and Muharram.
He said that it would be unfair not to mention and thank all the hardworking employees of KW and SB who work day and night to perform their duties. The water supply network in Karachi is a public service and I vow that we will continue our mission to please Allah Subhana o Tala and pray that Allah may help me and my fellows to fulfill this task.
