National Voters Day: Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary verifies his vote

Islamabad, October 18, 2012 (PPI-OT): Today, Acting Secretary Election Commission in presence of Acting Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan Hon’ble Mr. Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani and two other members of Election Commission presented a demo to Hon’ble Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary regarding the confirmation of vote registration through SMS. The Hon’ble Chief Justice also verified his vote by sending his CNIC No. to 8300. He appreciated this tremendous facility extended to general public for confirmation of registration of their votes. On this occasion, the Hon’ble Chief Justice said:-

“I am immensely pleased to learn that the Election Commission of Pakistan is celebrating today i.e. 17th October, 2012, the National Voters Day, underlining the importance of a voter in the electoral process. No one can deny that voter participation is a key to ensuring credibility of an election. Change of government through votes as per the Constitution, strengthens the democratic process thereby heralding new vistas of peace, happiness and development. Greater participation of voters in election puts positive pressure on the governing institutions to work for the well being of the people of Pakistan.

Ensuring active participation of voters requires that all eligible persons are on the electoral rolls. Participation of voters is also directly related to creating a conducive environment in and around the polling stations to ensure free and fair elections which is a mandate of the Constitution and shall shape the destiny of the nation.

Activities around the National Voters Day including engagement of the voters to know where their votes are registered and how to logistically and freely reach to polling station, is very important for exercise of this constitutional right.

I do not hesitate to express that creating awareness amongst voters is a national cause which needs support from all stakeholders. I also see greater role of the Pakistani civil society in this endeavour and I expect their active participation.

I am sure the activities of celebrating the National Voters Day would prove another positive step to bring better changes under the Constitution for the well being of the nation”.
