Islamabad, August 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): Chairman NDMA Major General Saeed Aleem, Minister of State for Information Technology Anusha Rehman, DG PDMA Punjab Asif Mahmood and Chief Engineer Federal Flood Commission Alamgir Khan addressed a press conference at NDMA, Prime Minister’s Office. Brig. Kamran Zia, Member Operations NDMA gave a detailed briefing about the overall flood situation, current river flow, countrywide damages and relief provided. He said that NDMA is closely monitoring the situation and water has started to recede.
Major General Saeed Aleem said that NDMA and its provincial sub institutions are fully prepared to deal with any emergency during the monsoon season. He stated that routine rains are expected for the current year’s monsoon season, whereas, a few areas of Punjab and Sindh are expected to be flooded during the month of September.
NDMA has necessary funds and resources to handle the situation arising from rains and floods. The federal and provincial governments are coordinating with each other and are prepared to meet any emergency. NDMA has also trained staff at the district level to cope with natural disasters.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Information Technology Anusha Rehman said that government is committed to provide all necessary resources to help the people affected by floods. She said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has issued special instructions in this regard. Director General PDMA Punjab Asif Mahmood added that this year normal Monsoon rains are expected. He said that there were 30 percent less rains in July, however there is a slight possibility that rains in September will be above normal.
The NDMA officials while briefing the media informed that NDMA extended full support to the Provincial Governments and coordinated relief and rescue efforts. Timely advisories are being issued to all concerned authorities in collaboration with Pakistan Metreological Department.
