National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defence Production meets

Islamabad, February 17, 2014 (PPI-OT): Chairman National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence Production Khawaja Sohail Mansoor with all esteemed members of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence Production held a meeting at Ministry of Defence Production.

Minister for Defence Production Rana Tanveer Hussain was kind to have been present at the meeting himself and introduced all Chairmen of Defence Industries along with Secretary Defence Production and Additional Secretary Defence Production. All the Establishments of Defence Production were represented by their respective Chairmen who presented complete picture of their industries to the members of the Committee.

Minister for Defence Production apprised the committee that he had himself taken many initiatives to resolve existing problems of the Defence Production Industry. He added that best jamming devices are being produced in Pakistan today and it will be of great loss to national exchequer if our own organizations/Govt departments do not buy our indigenous products instead purchase them from abroad. The Chairman and other esteemed members of the committee stressed that if such a practice is in vogue then this should be stopped at the earliest so that the defence industry gets a boost at national level.

Secretary Defence Production Lt. Gen (retd) Tanvir Tahir said that it is unfortunate that when it comes to procurements from within the country, our Govt sector departments become hardened. However, it should be that we must come forward in supporting our local industry.

The Committee added that the practice of not acquiring NOC by MoDP is wrong and it should be brought to notice of concerned ministries and departments purchasing equipment for LEAs.

Matters of budgeting and procurement also came under discussion. Problems of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering works along with other establishments were kept in front of the committee for due consideration. The committee also suggested that since the matters are of great importance therefore they may be brought to notice of Council of Common Interest.

The committee also added that the positions of procuring products from local industry may be kept in mind as the support in finding spares in inventory and giving problems cost effectively is of great significance.
