Peshawar, May 28, 2015 (PPI-OT): A meeting of the Standing Committee on Commerce held today at 02:00 p.m. in Conference Room of PC Hotel, Peshawar under the Chairmanship of Mr. Siraj Muhammad Khan, MNA to discuss the Yearly Performance Review of Pakistan Tobacco Board.
The Chairman, Pakistan Tobacco Board apprised the committee that Pakistan Tobacco Board is a statutory body set up in 1968 through an Ordinance by the Federal Government to promote the tobacco cultivation on scientific lines. The Board has been assigned the functions of regulatory-cum-research and is not engaged in any commercial or trading business.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is producing 98% of Flue Cured Virginia over an area of 30,000 hectares, which generates annual income of around Rs.300 billion and this sector contributes to the government exchequer with more than Rs.89 billion in terms of Federal Excise Duty/Sales Tax in FY 2013-14. Pakistan is the 7th largest Flue Cured Virginia Tobacco producer in the world and its production/yield is 13% which is higher than the global average.
The Committee strongly recommended that the tenure of the Board of Directors of Pakistan Tobacco Board may be increased from two years to four years. In this respect the nomination of the members made by the Provinces may be done according to the ratio of tobacco production basis.
The Committee also recommended that the professionals from PTB may be send abroad for training including Cigar processing as it has a great potential worldwide. The Committee also recommended that the exports of tobacco shall be enhanced to benefits its growers. The coal and solar energy shall be used for tobacco processing/cooking to overcome the deforesting issue.
The meeting attended by Chaudhry Muhammad Shahbaz Babar, Mian Muhammad Rasheed, Ms. Tahira Aurangzeb, Ms. Shahzadi Umerzadi Tiwana, Makhdoom Syed Ali Hassan Gillani, Mr. Nazir Ahmed Bughio, Ms. Shazia Marri, Ms. Mussarat Ahmed Zeb, Ms. Sajida Begum and Dr. Fouzia Hameed MNAs, besides senior officers from Ministry of Commerce and Chairman, Pakistan Tobacco Board also.
