Islamabad, March 07, 2013 (PPI-OT): Dr. Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly said that the role of women was very important in prosperity and progress of every society but it was unfortunate that women around the globe were abused, harassed, marginalized and were compelled to live a miserable life under constant shadow of violence, diseases discrimination and poverty.
She stressed upon the world community for collective efforts and better legislation to protect women rights. She expressed these view in her message on International Women day being commemorated with the theme “The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum” throughout the world tomorrow.
She said that Islam gives equal respect and rights to women and strictly negated gender discrimination. She said that women in our society are confronting severe problems education, healthcare and employment. She said denying to women of their due rights was hampering economic progress and development. She said there was a need to change the mindset and perception of people to protect women rights and bring them into main stream.
The speaker said that empowerment and betterment of womenfolk in the country was the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and it went on her credit that despite all resistance from the forces of bigotry she introduce reforms for leading women into echelons of power. She said that in realization of the vision of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, women have been sufficiently represent in the present parliament and opportunities have been provided to them for their enhanced role in national development.
She said that women representation in public affairs was imperative to the functioning and strengthening of democracy and struggle against the oppression. She said that women need to be economically empowered therefore, women entrepreneurs are being encouraged to play active role in economic activities.
The Speaker said that the government has taken various steps for economic empowerment of women and has brought changes in the relevant laws to provide them safe working environment and also allocated substantial funds for provision of basic healthcare facilities and education to them.
She said that parliament has enacted several laws to protect women from violence and oppression including Women Harassment Bill, anti-women practices Bill and National Commission on the status of Women Bill.
She stressed the need for strict implementation and awareness of those Laws. She also appreciated role of women parliamentary caucus in National Assembly for protecting women rights and empowering them politically and economically. She also appreciated the role of non governmental organizations working for welfare and rights of women.
