National Assembly Speaker chairs meeting to review Partner Projects Assistance with Development Partners

Islamabad, May 15, 2014 (PPI-OT): Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq chaired a meeting in Parliament House, this afternoon to review the progress on the “Partner Projects Assistance” with the Development Partners. The Representatives from European Union Assistance Program, United Nations Development Program, German Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and Manzil Pakistan, Ms. Marriyum Aurangzeb, Convener Speaker’s Task Force, Secretary National Assembly attended the meeting.

While reviewing the progress on the activities assigned to different development partners, the Speaker said that it was encouraging to see the commitment of the international development partners for assisting the democratic institution in Pakistan to make them vibrant and more responsive to the needs of the masses. He said that with the consistent cooperation from the development partner, the tasks would be achieved in the stipulated time.

The Representatives of the respective Institutions individually apprised the Speaker about the tasks assigned to them. The Representative of EU informed that the 2nd phase of IP3 project would be launched during 3rd week of May, 2014 whereby a batch of Young Parliamentary Associates would be in place for assisting parliamentarians and committee Chairs.

He also informed about the performance evaluation and need assessment of Library, Research and Committee Wings of the Secretariat. He assured that the report would be submitted shortly to the Project Management Unit of the National Assembly.

The UNDP Representative apprised about the Capacity Review Analysis of the Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Services (PIPS) and its affiliation with International Think Tank Panel for enhancing Research and capacity Building capabilities of PIPS.

She also informed about the Job evaluation of entire Human Resource of National Assembly and details on establishment of a Legislative Council comprising prominent legislators, legal experts and intellectuals for assisting Members of the Parliament in Legislative drafting and other legislative matters.

The Representatives of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and Manzil Pakistan apprised the meeting about the tasks assigned to their respective organizations. They assured that the reports on the task assigned to them would be completed soon and submitted to the Project Management Unit for further consideration.

The Speaker thanked the participants and reassured his and his Secretariat’s support in achieving the targets within their timelines. He asked the Representatives of the development partners to expedite their assessment reports in order to launch the Strategic Framework Plan for the National Assembly during next month. He said that their help would enhance the capacity of the parliamentarians and parliamentary support staff.
