National Assembly of Pakistan, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association observes Commonwealth Day

Islamabad, March 10, 2014 (PPI-OT): The National Assembly of Pakistan, in collaboration with Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), observed for the first time in Pakistan, ”the Commonwealth Day” at the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services on Monday, 10th March 2014.

The theme of the event was ‘Team Commonwealth’. People; from all walks of life especially the youth; were prominently represented at the August occasion. The program also included a ‘Youth Declamation Contest’ where specifically the young participants debated on the spirit of ‘Team Commonwealth’.

The guest of honour was Akram Zaki, a former senator, who held many important portfolios including the former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan. While recalling his participation in the struggle for Pakistan, he shed some light on the key role played by Youth, who worked day in and day out under the leadership of the founding father Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah to convert the dreams of Dr. Allama Muhammad Iqbal into reality. He read some invigorating lines of his own poetry, urging the youth to adopt the path of hard work, rationality and self-accountability.

Honorable Ms. Marriyam Aurangzeb, MNA, was the Chief Guest of the event. She delivered an eloquent speech encouraging the young blood to come into the main stream and fully utilize their strengths to play a prominent role for the prosperity of this country.

She commended the vision of the Speaker National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for particularly focusing on youth, stressing on the need to harness the great potential present in our young generation and to divert their energies for the betterment of our beloved homeland.

She concluded her speech by informing the audience about the new initiatives being taken by the Parliament viz energy conservation and Young Parliamentary Associate program, highlighting the magnitude of available opportunities to the youth to become a part of the policy making.

The program also included a briefing presentation on the description of commonwealth along with a quiz competition which become a source of great interest for the audience. The program was concluded by a musical performance by the young musicians.
