National Accountability Bureau, Anti-Corruption Action Group agree to enhance their engagement to curb menace of corruption from the country

Islamabad, July 02, 2014 (PPI-OT): The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Anti-Corruption Action Group (ACAG) have agreed to further boost cooperation and enhance their engagement to curb the menace of corruption from the country. This was decided in a meeting of ACAG and NAB authorities held here at NAB Headquarters today. Chairman NAB Qamar Zaman Chaudhry presided over the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman NAB informed the Group regarding NAB’s efforts towards eradication of corruption. NAB has re-invigorated its efforts and directions have been conveyed to Regional offices for time-bound results. He welcomed ACAG’s initiative for closer interaction with NAB and assured the participants of all-out support.

To this effect, he informed that NAB is focusing to work with the international agencies in the areas of Training, and Awareness and Prevention (A and P) with the aim to highlight the ill-affects of corruption. He called for sustained and constructive engagement with International Partners to further this agenda.

The ACAG delegation head Mr. Ben French speaking on behalf of the group, informed about the composition of the group which draws it membership for all local based donor/development agencies i.e. World Bank, USAID, DIFD, EU, UNODC, UNDP etc.

He said that ACAG has agreed to work with NAB on primary areas including measures related to United Nation Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) implementation in the country and serve as an Anti-Corruption knowledge-sharing and coordination platform for the government counterparts and members from the international community.

He said the ACAG plans to work on establishing “Governance Partnership” with government and civil society organizations. He said that corruption affects delivery of services, growth, development and democracy. Engagement at various levels is required to improve outcomes of donors’ projects/programs. He said it is the right time globally and in Pakistan to work on this front.

Director General Operations and Prosecutor General Accountability NAB briefed the delegation on the working methodology and achievements of the Bureau. The delegation appreciated NAB for its efforts for eradication of corruption and especially for good conviction rate in the corruption cases.

They appreciated recent momentum in NAB’s activities in Awareness and Prevention, Enforcement and Prosecution matters. The Group expressed their desire to engage more constructively with NAB in the future.
