Islamabad, October 16, 2012 (PPI-OT): Women’s Parliamentary Caucus organized a program in the Parliament House, paying tribute to the National Peace Award winner Malala Yousafzai who was shot in an assassination attempt by the Taliban, in retaliation to her efforts in restoration of education for girls in Swat.
In her opening remarks Secretary WPC, Dr. Nafisa Shah in very strong words condemned the heinous crime and prayed for Malala’s early recovery.
In a joint statement Members of the WPC condemned the obscurantism of the tehreek-e-taliban which uses religion to promote its own agenda of hatred and extremism. Members reiterated their support for all Pakistanis who are fighting against terrorism especially the people of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa and FATA and urged the Government, all elements of Pakistan’s society, judiciary and government functionaries to stand firm in fighting against terrorism and extremism and also to support the cause of education for the girl child, which was the reason for targeting of Malala Yousafzai.
They also suggested that development should be fast tracked in FATA especially the reconstruction of Schools and Frontier Crimes Regulations should be abolished to bring FATA in to the mainstream.
Ms. Jamila Gilani and Mr. Shamoon Hashmi graced the event with beautiful poetry dedicated to the high spirited Malala while other members also spoke on the issue. In her closing remarks Dr. Azra Fazal Pacheco stressed upon the need of education for girls and to fight terrorism to secure a better future for the youth of this country.
