Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar meets British delegation and discuss potential areas of mutual interest and human rights situation in Pakistan

Islamabad, November 27, 2012 (PPI-OT): A British delegation called on the Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights, Mr. Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar in Islamabad. The delegation was briefed about various initiatives taken by the present government to improve the human rights situation in Pakistan. While pointing out international commitments of such as Preparation of Universal Periodic Report (UPR), International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Convention Against Torture (CAT), Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) etc., the advisor added that also these conventions were not only be ratified but would also be implemented through domestic legislation.

He apprised them about recent legislative initiatives of the present Government for addressing human rights issues like National Commission for Human Rights Bill, the Women in Distress and Detention Fund Bill, National Commission for Women Bill, and Prevention of Anti Women Practices Bill (Private Member Bill). Additionally, the advisor told the delegation about the effectiveness of recently constituted National Commission on the Status of Women of Pakistan.

Responding to a question on recommendations received by various countries after presenting UPR the Advisor said that we are in consultation with stakeholders which ones are to be accepted and which are to be rejected.

Additionally the Advisor said that soon a comprehensive bill on child rights will be tabled that will ensure the protection of children. He also said that recently work is being done on the preparation bill regarding Hindu marriages.

The delegation lauded the efforts of the advisor and the present government for taking effective steps to improve human rights situation in Pakistan.
