Srinagar, March 20, 2013 (PPI-OT): The so-called Legislative Assembly of occupied Kashmir on Wednesday witnessed a free-for-all when MLAs of Hindu extremist groups BJP, Panthers Party and Jammu State Morcha entered into a scuffle with Independent MLA, Engineer Abdul Rasheed for delivering anti-India speech on the floor of the House.
A minister and two MLAs, supporting the regime also rushed into the well of the House to support Rasheed. In the melee, Panthers Party MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia and BJP member Sukhnandan Chaudhary tried to push aside Rasheed to stop him from unleashing a tirade against India. Amidst pandemonium and unruly scenes, Speaker Mubarak Gul was forced to adjourn the House.
The rejection of resolution on return of bodies of Muhammad Maqbool Butt and Muhammad Afzal Guru, moved by Engineer Rasheed, by the Speaker has exposed not only the double standard of the National Conference but also brought forth the cleavage running between the ruling coalition.
Keen observers maintain that the NC is not ready to take the risk of going with any move that would jeopardize its equation with the Congress to remain in power.
NC would be the happiest at the rejection of the resolution, says Mohammad Amin, a political activist. It (allowing the resolution) could have put the chief minister and his party to a severe test. Given the chief minister’s public posturing, the NC had no option but to support it, he says adding that could have been catastrophic for the party as its power-partner Congress would never take it kindly.
Political analysts say that National Conference tries its best to please New Delhi to remain in power. People of Kashmir are quite secondary to it, says advocate Mohammad Ashraf. He argues that occasional pro-people gestures or utterances by the chief minister or other leaders of the party are mere gimmicks, he says. Sometime it appears that chief minister goes by a script with prior approval from New Delhi, he adds.
